High up on Castleton Rigg you will find a figure in the landscape. Unless you know he is there he doesn’t stick out prominently in amongst the Heather and the rocks as much as you would think, not from the roadside anyway.

When you’re used to only seeing a few stars seeing over a thousand with just the naked eye is a pretty breath-taking experience, especially if it’s your first time. The Moon can also be amazing depending on the month, time of night and time of year. When a full Moon rises and it’s low it truly is a tremendous sight to see. When the full Moon is up high the light streams across the sea lighting up the Bay and illuminating the silhouette of the cliffs and the Ravenscar headland. It’s beautiful and has been the subject of many a Robin Hood’s Bay painting and photo.

Perched on the coast between the surrounding cliffs from Scarborough to Whitby sits a Bay with the back drop of an old fishing village. Back in the days before the Victorian upper village was built Baytown’s red roofed chimney topped houses were home to fishing families. Tumbling down towards the sea it’s sometime impossible to know where one sandstone cottage begins and the other one ends.

Should you happen upon the slipway on certain nights of the year you may just find a board out at which you will know the walk will be about. All are welcome including the pooches of the family but do remember to be well behaved for you never know what may lurk in the shadows of Baytown just waiting for naughty noisy children big, small or furry.
