Coast to Coast

Robin Hood’s Bay

Perched on the coast between the surrounding cliffs of Scarborough and Whitby sits a Bay. The backdrop of the Bay is an old Yorkshire fishing village. This is Robin Hood’s Bay, the gem on the picturesque coastal edge of the North York Moors National.

Built on a steep hill the old 17th Century village heads down to the Bay. Winding streets, steep steps and cobbled alleyways make up what was once called Baytown. A maze of a village it’s easy to get lost here in Robin Hood’s Bay. Just all part of the magic of what makes it so special.

Robin Hood’s Bay harbours a deep rooted history of smuggling. The Kings Beck, cottage cellars, secret passages and snickets all helped with the illicit activities. Smuggling of Rum, Tea, Silk and Tobacco. There wasn't a person in the village that didn't participate in the illegal activities. Be it the smuggling, hiding, transporting or protecting of the secret goings on.

Legend has it that contraband could leave the Bay and reach the top of the village without ever seeing daylight. You can still see evidence of Robin Hood’s Bay’s smuggling past to this day and you can learn more at the local museum.

Dip Your Toes In The Sea

The story has it that to officially start and finish the Coast to Coast Walk participants must dip their boots in the sea.

Whether you choose:

Walking

Running

Cycling or

Four Wheels in a Terrain Hopper

Don't forget to dip your Boots, Running Shoes or Wheels in the sea at the start and finish of your adventure.

Celebrate At Wainwrights Bar

Wainwright's Bar named after the man himself sits in the Dock of Robin Hood’s Bay. Just next to the slipway down onto the beach.

Head down the slipway dip your toes, boots, training shoes or wheels and head back up and straight to the bar. Wainwrights Bar is the lower Bar of The Bay Hotel. Occasionally Wainwrights Bar won’t be open so head upstairs to sign the book. You can also purchase souvenirs or a certificate of completion. Last but not least enjoy a pint or two of Wainwright's Bitter.

Refuel The Coast Way

When on the coast what better than Proper Fish ‘n’ Chips?

The Yorkshire Coast is famous for the best quality Fish “n” Chips. After all, Whitby is the home of Scampi. Locally landed fish, flaky, white and cooked to perfection. Light crispy batter and the tastiest of chips crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Ooodles of Salt ‘n’ Vinegar. Don’t forget the scarps.

There are two Takeaway Fish & Chip Shops in Robin Hood’s Bay. You will also find offerings of Fish ‘n’ Chips, and Scampi in the local restaurants of Robin Hood’s Bay.

A Leisurely Recovery Stroll

After a much needed recovery sleep wake up and start the day with a gentle recovery beach stroll.

Robin Hood’s Bay Beach

There's lots to explore on Robin Hood's Bay Beach. There are rock pools galore here, tons of seaweed, sand, boulders and the scaurs. Everyone will love exploring Robin Hood’s Bay Beach.

Boggle Hole

Walking along the beach from Robin Hood’s Bay the cliff juts out slightly, you will need to cross the Beck water as it hits the beach. Waterproof footwear is always good here. The Beck can be fast flowing and well over ankle height.

Boggle hole is great for rockpooling, you’ll find heaps of seaweed and it's a great spot for fossil hunting. There's a Boggle Cave too. The Beck fills the large opening between the cliffs and it's fun to step on stones to get to the cafe. One of our favourites.

Stoupe Beck Sands

Here is the sandiest stretch of beach from Robin Hood’s Bay beach. You will know you are here by the foot bridge over the deep Beck. The Beck flows onto the beach amongst lots of pebbles.

Stoupe Beck sands is a really lovely spot to sit for the day, enjoy a picnic, paddle in the North Sea. This sandy stretch of beach lends itself well to beach games. You will find it a lot quieter here than Boggle Hole and Robin Hoods Bay Beach.

All of the beaches of Robin Hood’s Bay are Dog Friendly all year round.

Explore Robin Hood’s Bay

Robin Hood’s Bay’s old lower village is made up of cobbled streets, alleyways and snickets. There are many twists and turns. Stone and cobbled steps work their way up the village. It's easy to imagine life here as it was 300 years or so ago.

You never know where one turn may take you or what awaits you. Which direction will you take? It’s all part of the fun in getting to know Robin Hood’s Bay.

You will find a selection of cute independent shops here in Robin Hood’s Bay stocking a range of:
