52 Ways to Enjoy Robin Hood’s Bay: #8 Do A Beach Clean
Do A Beach Clean
One of the biggest challenges for marine life, coastal wildlife and nature
is man made debris, waste, plastic and pollution.
How can you help? By doing a beach clean. It can be two minutes or two hours.
Robin Hood’s Bay
Perched on the coast between the surrounding cliffs of Scarborough and Whitby sits a Bay. The backdrop of the Bay is the old Yorkshire fishing village Robin Hood’s Bay. Built on a steep hill the old 17th Century village heads down to the Bay. Winding streets, steep steps and cobbled alleyways make up what was once called Baytown. A maze of a village it’s easy to get lost here in Robin Hood’s Bay. Just all part of the magic of what makes it so special.
At the bottom of the village sits the most beautiful Bay looking out towards the North Sea. Surrounded by those dramatic cliffs
Robin Hood’s Bay is surrounded by an abundance of nature and wildlife. There are a whole host of animals that call here home living on the moorland, the cliffs, the beach and the sea. All just waiting to be observed and discovered.
Why Do A Beach Clean
You might be wondering what’s in it for you? Gratification. Knowing you have just prevented plastic, rubbish and debris from either being blown or washed into the sea. Robin Hood’s Bay Beach(es)
Robin Hood’s Bay Beach
Dog Friendly all year round you won’t find a single restriction here. There's lots to explore for both the pooch and the humans. There are rock pools galore here, tons of seaweed, sand, boulders and the scaurs. Everyone will love exploring Robin Hood’s Bay Beach.
Boggle Hole
Walking along the beach from Robin Hood’s Bay the cliff juts out slightly, you will need to cross the Beck water as it hits the beach. Waterproof footwear is always good here. The Beck can be fast flowing and well over ankle height.
Boggle hole is great for rockpooling, you’ll find heaps of seaweed and it's a great spot for fossil hunting. There's a Boggle Cave too. The Beck fills the large opening between the cliffs and it's fun to step on stones to get to the cafe. One of our favourites.
Stoupe Beck Sands
Here is the sandiest stretch of beach from Robin Hood’s Bay beach. You will know you are here by the foot bridge over the deep Beck. The Beck flows onto the beach amongst lots of pebbles.
Stoupe Beck sands is a really lovely spot to sit for the day, enjoy a picnic, paddle in the North Sea. This sandy stretch of beach lends itself well to beach games. You will find it a lot quieter here than Boggle Hole and Robin Hoods Bay Beach.
All of the beaches of Robin Hood’s Bay are Dog Friendly all year round. There's lots to explore for both the pooch and the humans.

What To Look For
Here in Robin Hood’s Bay you won’t find huge amounts of litter or debris on the beach but it is there. In comparison to many beaches Robin Hood’s Bay beach is relatively clean. However even we have had our eyes opened to how much plastic, rubbish and debris there really is on Robin Hood’s Bay beach.
In 2018 we took part in a big beach clean hosted by The Baytown Coffee Company and this really opened our eyes. Our beloved, beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay beach is not immune to the beach plastic problem. What was most surprising was the sheer number of tiny bits of plastic. Plastic is everywhere, in the seaweed, in the sand and in the rock pools. The worrying thing is that plastic is in the sea. More to the point the marine life and wildlife ingests, gets trapped or tangled up in this plastic.
It doesn't stop there. There is so much that can be found on the beach including:
Tyres
Parts of Boats
Fishing Equipment
Bottles and Glass
Rope
Old Nets
