Discover A Colony of Seals
Unveiling the Wild Symphony: A Seal-Watching Adventure in Robin Hood's Bay
The salty sea breeze lingers in the air, the waves lapping and crashing at the shore, a dramatic stretch of cliff adorned coastline, and a colony of seals awaits. This isn't just any seaside escape – it's a chance to witness the captivating grace of these majestic creatures in their natural haven, right here a stone's throw from Robin Hood's Bay.Before you embark on this wild exciting journey, let's ensure a harmonious encounter for both you and the seals.
Finding the Chorus
While Robin Hood's Bay itself doesn't host the colony, you will have to embark on a journey – a scenic beach walk (around an hour) or a steeper cliff scramble (proceed with caution due to erosion) – leads you to the Ravenscar Headland at the very far end of the Bay.
Meet the Locals
Two distinct acts grace this coastal wildlife haven:
The Grey Seals: Larger with elongated heads and upturned snouts, they often make their appearance in November, caring for their newborn pups.
The Common Seals (Harbour Seals): Smaller and more playful and with rounder faces, they prefer the inviting North Sea, though the pups might grace the scaurs taking a much needed rest in June and July.
Striking the Right Chord
Ensure a harmonious experience:
Footwear Matters: Sturdy waterproof shoes with good grips are your best friend, navigating rocky paths and slippery seaweed with much more ease.
Planning is Key: Check tide times and weather conditions – it is easy to become abruptly cut off on your adventure particularly after Stoupe Beck Sands otherwise.
Respectful Observation: Keep a safe distance, avoid loud noises, and never approach or disturb the seals. Binoculars and zoom lenses are your ticket for close-up views.
Responsible Pawprints: Keep your furry friend on a leash and maintain a respectable distance from the seals.
Beyond the Headland
Remember, we're guests in this natural habitat of these wonderful creatures. By observing with care, we minimise the impact on the seals and their welfare. Follow the Yorkshire Seal Group's Guidelines for responsible wildlife viewing – let the harmony continue for generations to come.
